I got my first pack of birth control pills today but I’m not on my period. Do I wait till I have it to start taking it or do I start immediately?

You can start taking them right away. If you start taking birth control pills within the first five days of the start of your period you’ll be protected from pregnancy right away.

If you start taking birth control pills any other time, you’ll need to use a condom or avoid sex at first because you won’t be protected from pregnancy right away. If you take a combination hormone pill (which most people do) you’ll be protected from pregnancy after seven days of taking your pill. If you take a progestin-only pill, you need to take the pill at the same time every day for two days and then you’ll be protected from pregnancy.
